How to pick the right TV antenna for your house

Before you buy anything, there's a free way to find out exactly which channels you can actually get and how strong an antenna you need. Most people skip this step and end up with the wrong one.

How over-the-air TV actually works

Local TV stations, the ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, and PBS affiliates in your area, broadcast their signal for free over the air, the same way they always have. That signal travels from a broadcast tower through the air and can be picked up by a simple antenna, no subscription, no monthly bill, no internet connection required.

This is different from streaming or cable, where the signal travels through the internet or a cable line to reach your TV. An antenna receives the broadcast directly from the tower, which is why your specific distance and line of sight to that tower matters so much for reception quality. It's also why an antenna can only pick up local channels rather than every channel available on cable, there simply isn't a broadcast tower sending out ESPN or HBO over the air.

Broadcast quality today is also a real step up from the old analog era. Most stations currently broadcast on the ATSC 1.0 standard, which delivers full HD at 1080i, genuinely sharp, and a big jump from analog TV. A newer standard called ATSC 3.0, marketed as NextGen TV, is rolling out gradually market by market and supports true 4K with HDR and improved sound, though it isn't available everywhere yet.

One thing worth knowing before you shop: there's no such thing as an antenna that receives "4K" or "8K." An antenna just picks up whatever signal quality the station is actually broadcasting, the resolution comes from the broadcast itself, not the antenna. Labels like "4K antenna" on the box are marketing, not a real technical feature, so don't pay extra for that claim specifically.

Check your signal before you buy

Every house is different. Two homes a few miles apart can get completely different results depending on distance to the broadcast towers, terrain, and even nearby buildings or trees. Buying an antenna based on a generic "works great!" review, without checking your own situation first, is the most common reason people end up disappointed with their purchase.
